The institutions of public government which make up the Nunavut Marine Council (NWMB, NPC, NIRB, and NWB) first began receiving a small amount of dedicated annual funding in the 2015-16 fiscal year for activities undertaken in support of implementing NMC activities. This NMC funding is provided by the Government of Canada through the implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, and is disbursed in equal amounts to each NWMB, NPC, NIRB and NWB through annual contribution agreements. Currently this funding level is set at $25,000 each, indexed for inflation.

The NMC also receives funding, administered through NIRB, for ocean protection initiatives through Transport Canada’s Program to Advance Indigenous Reconciliation (PAIR) (Indigenous and Local Communities Engagement Component). This funding supports the NMC Policy Advisor position which works directly with each of the member organizations of the Nunavut Marine Council to provide much-needed support towards implementation of this key function of the Nunavut Agreement. This funding helps improve the capacity of the Nunavut Marine Council to be an active voice on marine issues for Nunavummiut and contributes to advancing the goals of the Nunavut Marine Council’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan.

The NMC is actively seeking opportunities to access funding which will support undertaking additional initiatives.
